Christopher Columbus discovered it and named it Costa Rica in the year 1502.
Located in the Central American tropics, Costa Rica is like a garden between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It borders on Panama to the South and Nicaragua to the North. Costa Rica is rich in flora and fauna, it has hundreds of kilometers of beaches and 25% of the national territory is dedicated to the preservation of national parks. Also, Costa Rica has the 6% of the biodiversity of the entire planet.
The ocean waters have a tempareture of 26 degrees, so they are very plesant to enjoy all year around.
The weather also is very enjoyable all year long, with little fluctuation of the temperatures. The climate is defined in a rainy season from May to October, during which one to two hours of rain may be expected in the afternoons.
The capital, San Jose, is located within the Central Valley, where climate is spring- like most of the year. Its temperature is cooler and more moderate than that of beaches and coastal area.
Known as the "Central American Switzerland", Costa Rica has the best-established democracy in Latin America. Security and a higher standard of living were achieved with the abolition of the army in the 1948 political constitution.
Costa Rican people, called "Ticos", are friendly. Two simple words that identify them at all times are "Pura Vida", meaning "very well". In addition, a great percentage of the population has a good use of English.
